Years 3 and 4 Spring 2025 Curriculum Overview

Subject

Teaching and Learning

Parental Involvement - We encourage parents to choose at least one activity for each subject to support your child in their learning.

Maths

The children will be learning how to multiply and divide a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number using their times tables knowledge. They will be problem-solving using related calculations and scaling. The children will also be learning how to measure lengths using metres, centimetres and millimetres, along with comparing lengths and adding and subtracting lengths.  They will also be learning how to measure and calculate the perimeter of a shape.

Year 4 children will also learn about multiplying and dividing 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, fractions and decimals.

Your child can practise times tables on TT Rock-stars. Also, test them when you’re in the car or walking to school. Little and often makes a big difference! There are lots of fun games and songs available online too.

English

The children will be reading a variety of high-quality texts that will spark their interest, starting with ‘Marcy and the riddle of the sphinx’ by Joe Todd Stanton and 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes.  The texts will cover poetry, fiction and non-fiction.  The children will be writing recounts, character descriptions and instructions on how to make papyrus. They will learn to write for different audiences. The children will be taught age related spelling, grammar and punctuation discretely.

Find ways for your children to write for a purpose, e.g. write a letter to a friend or family member, write a shopping list or a story based on their favourite toy/film or book character. As part of our non-fiction writing, the children could write a set of instructions for cooking, playing a game or making something. They could also write about an event or something they would like to share with others.

Reading

During guided reading sessions, the children will all read the same text and discuss the text using VIPERS skills (vocabulary, inference, prediction, explain, retrieve, summarise/sequence).

Please listen to your child read at least 4 times per week. Children who read regularly at home make the most progress, not just in reading, but right across the curriculum. Please ask us if you need any support.

Science

This term our science topics will be ‘Forces and Magnets’ and ‘Sound’. In the first half-term, we will be learning about different types of forces and the properties and use of magnets and magnetic materials. In the second half-term, we will be identifying how sounds are made and received, as well as looking at pitch, volume and sound insulation.

Have a look at the videos all about the science topics here: Forces and Magnets
Sound

Have you got any magnets at home? What things do they attract and repel? Where will they stick?

Computing

We will be learning how to touch type using specific fingers for different keys on the keypad. We will be looking at and exploring different types of simulations. The children will also be learning about how to compose and send an email alongside the importance of E safety.

Please use the website BBC dance mat to help your child practise their touch typing at home.

RE

This term the children will be focusing on the question “What makes some texts sacred?” They will explore texts from different religious scriptures, looking at the similarities and differences between them, what they mean to the people who follow that faith, and discussing their importance to the people following that religion.

We are focusing mainly on Christanity and Judaism this term, so have a look at BBC Bitesize where your child can learn more about these religions.

Art

The children will be learning about how the Egyptians made scrolls and how they wrote hieroglyphics. Each child will be making their own papyrus and decorating it with their own hieroglyphics.

Learn more about hieroglyphics by looking at this website.

D&T

The children will be creating their own wearable technology by researching into wearable technology, designing their own electronic watch and programming their own codes on a micro bit.

To learn more about coding and micro bits, please look at the following website - Micro bits

PSHE

Health and Well-being

The children will be learning about how to stay healthy and how our diet affects our bodies and our teeth, develop a growth mindset and consider how we can increase our happiness.

Safety and the Changing Body
The children will be learning about being kind and staying safe online; learning how to identify and deal with cyberbullying; understanding the difference between secrets and surprises; learning how to treat bites and stings and considering who influences our choices. In Year 3, children will learn about road safety and how to call the emergency services, and in year 4 we will think about how our bodies change as we go through puberty.

Create a happiness journal for the week. Every day, write down one thing that you are proud of, one thing that made you happy and one thing you are looking forward to.

History

This term, the children will be looking at the ancient Egyptians and what they believed. They will focus on understanding who the gods and goddess of Ancient Egypt were, the mummification process, why the pyramids were considered to be so important and the book of the dead.

Have a look at these videos all about Ancient Egypt.

There is a lot of information about Ancient Egypt at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Take a look at their school website or if you have time, go for a visit!

Geography

This term the children will be learning all about settlements. They will explore different types of settlements, land use, and the differences between urban and rural environments. Children will also describe the different human and physical features in their local area and make land-use comparisons with New Delhi.

Here are 3 videos you can watch:

What is a map?

PE

This term the children will be learning gymnastics and basketball. Children should bring their PE kit into school and their PE days which will be Wednesdays and Fridays.

Practise some basketball drills using this basketball video.

Music

The children will be singing and listening to syncopated rhythms in Latin dance. They will:

  • listen to a range of Cuban pieces, understanding influences on the music and recognising some of its musical features;

  • develop active listening skills by responding to musical themes through movement;

  • understand the structure of rondo form (A-B-A-C-A);

  • develop a sense of beat and rhythmic pattern through movement.

Enjoy listening to music and singing with your child at home or in the car. Developing a lifelong love of music is the first and most important step towards being a successful learner of music!

MFL

In French, we will be learning how to name fruits and pets and how to talk about these topics. In year 3, we will learn the names of different fruits and say whether we like the fruits or not. In year 4, we will be learning how to say the names of different pets and how to say if we do or do not have those animals.
